Onam (ഓണം) Kerala’s a vibrant celebration. Harvest Festival
Onam, the harvest festival of Kerala, is a vibrant celebration steeped in both cultural and religious significance.
Onam coincides with the arrival of the monsoon and the subsequent reaping of the rice harvest. It’s a time to express gratitude to the land for its bounty and pray for continued prosperity.
Mythological Significance:
The festival commemorates the story of King Mahabali, a revered but prideful king, and Vamana, the fifth avatar of Vishnu. Legend says Mahabali was granted a boon that allowed him to rule the earth. Vamana, in the form of a dwarf, tricked Mahabali and pushed him down to the underworld (Pathala). However, Vamana, impressed by Mahabali’s generosity, allowed him to visit Kerala every year during Onam. People believe King Mahabali’s spirit returns during Onam, bringing prosperity.
Cultural Extravaganza:
- Onam is a ten-day long celebration marked by various cultural events.
- Homes are adorned with intricate flower rangolis called Pookalam.
- People wear new clothes -partake in grand feasts (Onasadhya)
- participate in folk dances like Kaikottikali
- witness the spectacular Thripunithura Athachamayam procession.
Onam Malayali New Year:
Onam falls in the first month of the Malayalam calendar, Chingam. So, the festivities also mark the Malayalam New Year, a time for renewal and fresh beginnings.
Overall, Onam is a joyous celebration that transcends religious boundaries. It’s a time for families to come together, express gratitude for the harvest, and commemorate Kerala’s rich cultural heritage.
